i started this blog a little late.

I've read a quarter of it so far.  Stuff has happened, like goblins, running, mountains, and a few men with beards.  Have yet to see a lady in this book...maybe they live in a society without them?

The Hobbit (and Lord of the Rings to a not very much smaller degree) is not so much a sexist world, as sexless. Sexuality, along with economics, were subjects that simply didn't interest Professor Tolkien. It's part of what gives the books their wonderful strangeness. 99% of human art is about sex, on some level, but Middle Earth is not.

I guess I'm just sensitive to the absence of ladies in a story. I definitely notice when a new, exciting new TV show trailer is unveiled, and it looks super cool and badassed and destructive and somehow related to espionage, but the hero is never, ever a woman. Even today, women are always the accessories, but in this story, they're not even there! I mean, I'm still waiting for some kind of token princess or old wench SOMEWHERE in the storyline.

I am with you, Natalie! And so is my grumpy ten-year-old self who wished for girls in the Hobbit the first time around. I was even more grumpy about it with Lord of the Rings, though, because there you actually do get female characters and they... disappoint. When women are gone altogether, I think it can potentially qualify as wonderful strangeness (as per Chris) but when they're technically around but still gone, if you see what I mean, that's really vexing.
