I'm in formal relationship with public transportation, and I spend
time with it dutifully every day. Sometimes I'm grateful for the
places it brings me, sometimes I roll my eyes at its stupidity, but
underneath it all, I've made a commitment to a life without my own
wheels. This commitment is logical in new york city, where personal
transportation isn't spatially or financially feasible, so in other
cities, I can't help but look at how people are getting around en masse.
I went to Hawaii the week of Thanksgiving to visit my brother, Kurt, and
I have to admit that the most impressive thing I saw was Oahu's bus
system. (Don't get the wrong idea--Hawaii was beautiful, but since I lived in
Santa Cruz for a while, a beach is a beach to me, and it doesn't get
much more beautiful than the drive down Route 1 to Big Sur. )
Why do I like the bus system there? A few reasons -- after the jump.
